Help Goalball athletes compete in the upcoming Goalball Americas Championships! Your funds help athletes like an inspiring young member of our Canadian Goalball community who lives with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), Harry Nickerson. Beyond the court, Harry is a remarkably talented young scientist. His work at the Canada-Wide Science Fair has earned him a gold medal in 2023 for his project on improving visual field testing algorithms, and a silver medal in 2024 for an app that can tentatively diagnose RP from retinal images rapidly, as detailed in this article: here. This year, he's aiming for further success, training AI to diagnose various eye conditions and developing a low-cost retinal camera that does not require eye drops. Notably, Harry's scientific exploration into vision and eye conditions directly mirrors the lived experiences of many of our athletes. On the court, Harry is also a phenomenal talent with a throwing speed of 75km, placing him as one of Canada's fastest goalball throwers at only 16. He is a future leader within the team and the wider visually impaired community. His scientific insights offer a powerful perspective on the abilities and adaptations we see firsthand in our athletes.
