about

Visit our website CFUW-N to find out about our 31st annual scholarship fundraiser presenting Moira Welsh, investigative journalist and author, on October 3, 2022.

CFUW-Northumberland, founded in 1991, is part of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), a national bilingual, non-profit and non-partisan organization of women in clubs across Canada. Members are committed to the pursuit of knowledge and the promotion of education. By promoting high standards of public education, advanced study and research by women and sound concepts of lifelong learning, we encourage and enable women to apply their knowledge and skills in leadership and decision-making in all aspects of political, social, cultural, educational and scientific fields.

Over the past 31 years, CFUW-Northumberland has, through scholarships and bursaries, enabled young women across Northumberland County to pursue higher education. Membership is open to all women who value learning. Monthly speakers present interesting and challenging talks on a wide-range of topics from health and the arts, the environment, current events, local history, women’s issues, justice and education.

CFUW-N is proud to offer scholarships to young women graduating from each of the six Northumberland county high schools and to a non-status First Nations, Métis or Inuit female pursuing post-secondary education at Trent University, administered through The First People’s House of Learning. CFUW-N awards a bursary to a candidate at Fleming College and maintains an endowment fund at Trent University which also provides bursaries for Northumberland County students.

In honour of both CFUW-N's 30th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of Dr. Roberta Bondar's space flight, 6 additional scholarships of $1,500 each were awarded to high school students pursuing further education in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). In addition, five $500 bursaries were awarded to high school students pursing apprenticeship programs. Over $18,000 in scholarships and bursaries were awarded in the 2021-2022 year.

Our Club continues to attract and be enriched by talented and resourceful members, women who are also involved in local community groups and activities.
