For Ladakhi families with HIV and Hep B, battling the stigma of the illnesses is only one concern. In order to stay on state-subsidised medicines, affected members must travel over the highest mountains in the world every six months for testing. The cost and the journey itself are too much for many women and children.
Our programme helps 40 of the most impoverished families pay a subsidy for travel to testing (in a group allowing them mutual support and safety) or their anti-viral meds.
It costs just $42 per year to change the life of a family. And that helps us fight the stigma of testing positive.
