Mothercraft, Breaking the Cycle is a program of Mothercraft, delivered through a formal service partnership with Toronto Public Health, the Hospital for Sick Children, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto Western Hospital – Mental Health and Addictions, the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, the Catholic Children’s Aid Society, St. Michael’s Hospital and the Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections and the Ontario Association of Midwives.  Breaking the Cycle (BTC) is an early intervention/ children’s mental health program designed to reduce the risk and enhance the development of substance-exposed children by addressing maternal substance use issues and the mother-child relationship. 

Programs are delivered through an integrated cross-systemic service model and serve women who are pregnant and /or parenting children under the age of six.  Admission to the program requires that women be willing to participate in addiction, parenting, and child developmental services.

Breaking the Cycle includes a pregnancy outreach component serving pregnant women with substance use problems through street outreach, individual counseling, and intensive case management.  The BTC Pregnancy Outreach Program is designed to enhance maternal and fetal health outcomes by facilitating women’s access to health and social supports, including addiction treatment, prenatal care, and safe housing.
