About CANADIAN REP THEATRE

Canadian Rep Theatre was originally founded by Ken Gass in the mid-1980s with touring productions from Quebec by Robert Lepage and Gilles Maheu, while also creating projects of its own for major theatre festivals. In the 1990's the company produced several independent projects and,in 2005 embarked on a four-year research project exploring culturally diverse approaches to the Canadian repertoire.  In 2013, Gass announced plans to re-build Canadian Rep Theatre into a major company with the goal of establishing a permanent ensemble focusing on innovative approaches to the Canadian canon. The inaugural season launched in January, 2014 with three premiere productions in four venues in Toronto and Vancouver, including works by Wajdi Mouawad, Judith Thompson and George F. Walker.  Following the success of the past season, Gass has recently announced three new productions for the 2015 season, including recent works by Colleen Murphy and Florence MacDonald, and a revival of a large-scale George F. Walker classic.  Development work on several new projects continues, including a large-scale cross-cultural opera, along with plans to tour earlier works.  Canadian Rep Theatre will also sponsor in 2016 a national youth theatre initiative, ENSEMBLE: Canadian Youth Theatre/Théâtre Jeunesse Canadien.
