OUR PROGRAM
Not only does cancer affect the body; it affects mental health, livelihood, family, and much more.
In India, people diagnosed with cancer and their families often need practical and emotional support programs throughout the entire cancer journey: diagnosis, treatment, recovery and remission. For many in India, these programs are unaffordable.
Cancer often requires relatively expensive, complex, multimodal medical treatment for extended periods, leading to household impoverishment, treatment abandonment, and, too often, poor outcomes, especially if the disease is detected at a later stage or patients cannot adhere to a full regime of treatment.
OVERVIEW OF HEALTH CONDITIONS IN INDIA
In India, one in nine people are likely to develop cancer in his/her lifetime. The National Cancer Registry Program in India reported in 2022 that lung and breast cancers were the leading sites of cancer in males and females, respectively. Among the childhood (0-14 yr) cancers, lymphoid leukemia (boys: 29.2% and girls: 24.2%) was the leading site. The incidence of cancer cases is estimated to increase by 12.8 per cent in 2025 as compared to 2020.
PROGRAM GOALS - THE EQUIPMENT WE ARE FUNDRAISING FOR
This fundraising campaign will purchase a state of art Radiotherapy System for The Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre near Vellore in Tamil Nadu, South India. This equipment was chosen so that care teams at The Sri Narayani Hospital's Oncology Department can harness transformative technology and expand treatment options for underserved patients.
Additional medical units may include a double-photon energy unit, a brachytherapy afterloader (ideally for high dose-rate brachytherapy), a full range of applicators, a CT simulator, a computerized treatment planning system (TPS), patient immobilization devices, and equipment for beam measurement and quality assurance.
The total cost for this Varian TrueBeam Cancer Treatment System is approximately C$ 2,800,000. We have raised up to the end of 2025 over $400,000 so far.
This radiotherapy equipment is aimed at treating an average of 1000 patients per year. About 75% of the patients served by Sri Narayani Hospital will be below the poverty threshold in India and require subsidized treatment plans.
