Cantabile Choirs

about

The Cantabile Choirs is a community choral organization that seeks to provide comprehensive music education through the performance of quality choral music. Established in 1996 under founding Artistic Director Dr. Mark Sirett, the Cantabile organization today consists of seven choirs, totalling over 250 choristers of all voice-types and ages (6 and up) from the Kingston region. The choirs perform an eclectic array of music - from early music to contemporary and world music - with an emphasis on works by Canadian composers, arrangers, and poets. In addition to weekly rehearsals and a regular concert season of seven performances, the program seeks to broaden chorister appreciation of the choral art through weekend retreats/workshops, choir camps, Canadian and international guest conductors and educators, domestic and international touring, recording projects, collaborative concerts with professional artists/groups, and other engagements throughout the community. The organization is committed to broadening audience experience and appreciation of the choral art through visually-enhanced themed concerts, pre-concert lectures, guest conductors, and multi-disciplinary artist collaborations. The organization is dedicated to helping increase cross-cultural awareness and appreciation by programming a wide variety of repertoire from different cultures and engaging culturally diverse guest artists.

Cantabile Choirs seek to support the larger artistic community through the commissioning of new works, primarily by Canadian composers and poets. It holds an extensive library of choral music that is made available as a resource and lending library to other choirs across the country. The organization aims to reduce barriers to the performing arts by providing bursaries to members in need of financial assistance, rehearsing and performing in accessible spaces, and ensuring an inclusive environment for choristers of all cultural and personal identities. The organization offers free concert tickets to people with development disabilities through Ongwanada, and to families in need of financial assistance through the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston & Area.
