Each summer, we hire tutors to work with children from Kindergarten to Grade 3, helping them become more confident readers. Tutors work one on one with each child for two weeks, every day. They read books at their levels, do fun exercises to improve reading skills, and work on overall confidence.
While we'd love to have an infinite number of spaces for literacy tutoring, our library space can only accommodate two tutors currently, working five days a week. However, we've been able to expand our tutoring sessions to include "Flex Fridays" where the tutors work with students for 30 minute sessions only, and on a weekly sign up basis only. This allows us to have 16 additional spaces each week, and was a great success last year when we tried it for the first time.
During the summer of 2020, we hope to have THREE tutors-----two tutors to do the two-week sessions, and one to work on a daily basis as a flex tutor, or more of a reading buddy. By developing a position that is so flexible, we could improve the times we are able to offer to parents. Currently, we do not offer tutoring sessions in the evenings or on weekends, but this would allow us to have some of these times available, which would also make our space issues easier.
If you donate $23, it will provide one child a session with the flex tutor. A monthly donation throughout the year of $23 will help us to expand that to 12 sessions during the summer. Starting in December of 2019, our aim is to provide five months of donation fundraising, which will be about half of what we need. We hope to continue this campaign throughout 2020 in order to fund more children during the following year.
Thank you so much for considering this support. We couldn't do this wonderful program without you!
