about

Once upon a time…

INTRODUCTION

1850 – The Christian community of the Clerics of St. Viateur arrived in Canada, settled in Montreal, and began their mission in specialized education for the deaf-mute. This community had been founded in France by Abbé de l’Épée.

1899 – A group of deaf adults regularly lingered in the playground of the Institution for the Deaf-Mute. They seemed bored and unsure of what to do with their free time after work.

One day, a religious brother, Brother Louis Gareau, C.S.V., tired of seeing them wander aimlessly and aware that they couldn't participate in regular social activities due to their inability to speak or hear, said to them: “Why don’t you form a club?” The idea had been launched.

He then went to consult his superior, Father Michel Cadieux, C.S.V., newly elected head of the Congregation of the Clerics of St. Viateur in Canada, to share his thoughts: “Perhaps our mission isn't over,” he said. “Maybe we should also support them after their studies, so that they can flourish and live a harmonious life among themselves.” After giving it some thought, Father Cadieux gave his blessing and offered them a small space within the institution where they could gather. However, the idea, lacking sufficient development, took two more years before becoming a reality.

1901 – Finally, on April 28, 1901, the Cercle Saint-François-de-Sales was born. Over the years, it would change names several times before becoming, upon its incorporation in 1965, the Centre des loisirs des Sourds de Montréal Inc.(CLSM).

The Organization’s Mission

A pillar for nearly 125 years, the Centre des loisirs des Sourds de Montréal (CLSM) provides an inclusive space for deaf individuals of all ages. Its mission: to break isolation, strengthen social connections, and promote growth, inclusion, and diversity within a community that is often marginalized. Everyone is welcome: seniors, youth, adults, and deaf children from the school system.

Incorporated in 1965, the Centre des loisirs des Sourds de Montréal Inc. (CLSM) is the oldest recreational and cultural activities center for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in all of Canada. On April 28, 2026, it will celebrate its 125th anniversary and is seeking public support in organizing the event to continue its mission. For the future, the organization hopes to relocate permanently to a larger space, depending on the funds raised.
