As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, Canada’s most vulnerable youth are in crisis.
They are youth as young as 18 who have “aged out” of the child welfare system, no longer eligible for the support they received while living in foster care or group homes, and with no family to turn to.
Many are still healing from childhood abuse, and are being re-traumatized by the extraordinary sense of instability and fear. Many were already struggling with food and housing insecurity, and are now completely unable to meet their own basic needs. Those who had part-time and temporary jobs now find themselves abruptly unemployed but not eligible to access government support. Many are feeling like they have reached the breaking point.
“I’m low on food and money. Many of us are stuck in volunteer positions, underemployed, or have lost income due to closures. My casual gig I was finally able to secure is now lost too. Children of the system are always children of the system. Even the supports announced by the government don’t qualify many of us.”
– CHEYANNE, former youth in care
