Our Mission

Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC is a family-focused clinical and educational centre that teaches children who are deaf and hard of hearing to listen and talk, giving them the skills and confidence they need to achieve their fullest potential.

We are here to:

- positively impact the lives of children who are deaf and hard of hearing, their parents and families

- assist in early identification and intervention

- provide early intervention services and education for newborns, infants, toddlers, preschool, and Kindergarten to Grade 3 students who are deaf or hard of hearing

- offer services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing from Kindergarten to Grade 12 who attend independent schools throughout BC

- teach children listening and spoken language skills

- provide a spoken language environment for deaf and hard of hearing children, using a wide range of tools including augmentative communication, visual supports and basic sign language

- maintain a leadership role in deaf education through professional development

- work with families as partners in their child's growth

- offer parents a key role in the education of their child

- offer support locally, provincially and nationally

- support individual choices in communication needs and technology

We offer the following programs and services:

- Listening and spoken language specialists for newborns, infants, and toddlers

- Small student to teacher ratio instruction

- Language-rich Preschool programs (ages 30 months to 5 years)

- Elementary school (Kindergarten–Grade 3)

- On-site Audiology, including hearing aid and cochlear implant services

- Individual educational plans for each child- Speech and Language program

- Off-site teaching services

About Children's Hearing & Speech Centre of BC

Children's Hearing & Speech Centre of BC is licensed through Vancouver Coastal Health as a preschool, group child care and out of school care, providing a family centered approach to oral education for deaf and hard of hearing children from infancy to early primary years. Our itinerant teachers provide services to children and youth in independent schools throughout BC. Children's Hearing & Speech Centre of BC works in partnership with the BC Early Hearing Program, the province's early hearing screening and intervention program.
