The Children's Heart Society is a non-profit, charitable organization committed to providing support, education, research and awareness for those children affected with congenital and acquired heart disease.

Heart disease in children is the most common birth defect - occurring in 1 in every 100 births. Pediatric heart disease is the leading cause of infant death in Canada.  Heart disease in children does not discriminate; it can happen to a child of any nationality or socio-economic background.  Because heart disease, unlike cancer, is a hidden illness, the general public is unaware that children do suffer from what most of us believe to be an adult illness.

As such the funding and support received for pediatric heart disease is grossly disproportionate compared to the prevalence of these conditions.  However, with increased awareness and funding for support and research, a future in which no child dies from pediatric heart disease is possible.

The Children's Heart Society raises awareness through our hospital comfort bag program at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton, AB.  The bags are provided to children and newborns who have just been diagnosed with heart disease.  In receiving these bags the families become aware of the different supports that we can provide them with, and the children obtain items that they will cherish for years to come.
