Circle Back Foundation

about

The Circle Back Foundation was established in memory of Adam Joon, who tragically lost his battle with colorectal cancer at 44. This personal experience brought to light a critical issue in colorectal cancer screening and diagnosis. Despite increasing rates of colorectal cancer in younger individuals, particularly those aged 29-49, current screening guidelines in Ontario only recommend routine screening for individuals over 50. This policy overlooks the rising incidence of this disease in younger populations, potentially delaying diagnosis and treatment.

Colorectal cancer, traditionally more common in those over 50, has seen a concerning shift, with more cases being diagnosed in younger individuals. Although the reasons behind this trend remain unclear, it is evident that early detection is crucial. In fact, when detected early, colorectal cancer treatment has a success rate of up to 90%. This underscores the importance of access to screening, regardless of age.

The mission of the Circle Back Foundation is two-fold: firstly, to fund research to better understand why colorectal cancer is increasingly affecting younger people, and secondly, to advocate for legislative change to lower the screening age. By achieving these goals, the foundation aims to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, has access to potentially life-saving colorectal cancer screening. This initiative not only honors Adam Joon’s memory but also addresses a significant public health issue, reflecting the need to adapt healthcare practices to evolving disease patterns.
