Circles for Reconciliation builds relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples as part of the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action
We are a non-profit, grassroots project that seeks to promote reconciliation. The aim of Circles for Reconciliation Inc. (CFR) is to create new meaningful allyship, partnerships and lasting relationships that are based on mutual recognition, mutual respect, sharing and mutual responsibility. (TRC 2015). This is done through our Talking Circles for seven weeks @ 90 minutes per week. They involve an equal balance of First Nations/Inuit/Metis (FNIM) and non-Indigenous people . We have initiated quarterly webinars via Zoom for those whose schedules are limited.
Our biggest community event is National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21st at Sergeant Tommy Prince Place in Winnipeg's North End. We offer at no cost to community members; food, entertainment, artisan and community resource tables and a Talking Circle that day. It is held in the Spirit of Reconciliation and Celebration of FNIM people. At the moment, we had to layoff one Circle Coordinator and reduce another's hours as we wait for word of successful grant applications. The circle events take hours to prepare; we do have core volunteer staff members, and not to forget our Facilitators who lead the circles are also volunteers which we are most grateful.
The circles are coordinated for either a physical location or via Zoom. They are created for discussion and education on a number of our themes. Our Themes are currently transitioning into audio and videos via storytelling and for easier access for those with physical limitations. They are recorded by Elders and others who specialize in a Theme's content.
The basic purpose of a Talking circle is to create a safe, non-judgmental place where each participant has the opportunity to share in the discussion of difficult and/or important issues.
There is no cost for participants, only a common interest for all taking the journey towards Truth and Reconciliation and equality of opportunity for FNIM people.
