Summer—perhaps more than any other season—has the potential to provide experiences that produce life-changing moments and long-lasting memories. School’s out, the sun is shining bright, and the warm weather invites children to experience all that summer has to offer!
However, for many of our CityKidz kids summer just means two very long and boring months until school begins again. That’s because financial and mobility barriers prevent them from escaping the urban jungle.
Summer to Remember works alongside local camps and activity centres to provide children with opportunity for new, life-changing, memory-making experiences.
You can give the gift of summer to a child registered with CityKidz by making a donation of $50 to the CityKidz Summer of Hope Campaign. Each year we send over 40 children to various camps and help them to have a Summer to Remember experience to share in the fall when they return to school. Camp is a great opportunity to build self-esteem, build leadership skills and help to build resiliency in a child's life.
Andre has been attended camp since he was nine years old. His first couple years he was hesitant to go, but by the third year he couldn't wait until his week of camp came along. He has built some lasting relationships with the camp councillors and has also helped to make the trip to camp more relaxing for other campers that were reluctant to go their first time. Two years a go Andre came home from camp asking "When do I get to be a Camp Leader". This year Andre gets to register for the Leaders In Training Program and is so excited to be able to expand his leadership skills.
Jason, was one of those boys that was very quiet on the trip to camp last year. He was going the same week as Andre. Andre kept telling him about his first experience at camp and how much fun he will have. The ride home from camp was not quite as quiet, Jason was so excited to share how they got to go canoeing and have an overnight canoe trip. The boys shared about the wall climbing experience and making new friends. Just like week Jason asked if he will be able to go back to camp this year. We hope we can say yes to Jason in July.
