City Opera Vancouver is building a company, an audience, and a repertoire.
We present new work, commissioned by us and our funders. To date: FALLUJAH (2012); PAULINE (2014); THE LOST OPERAS OF MOZART (2016); and, MISSING (2017). In creation: CHINATOWN (2021).
We revive extant work, worthy of new life and new interpretation. This includes our SINGALONG CARMINA BURANA (2007, a Canadian first, drawing 800 people to a new company); EMPEROR OF ATLANTIS (2008, a British Columbia premiere); SUMIDAGAWA & CURLEW RIVER (2010, a Canadian event premiere and a unique double-bill, telling the same story as Japanese dance and as English opera); and, NIGREDO HOTEL (2018, a Vancouver premiere).
We do all of this with partners, including the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre; the Annenberg Foundation / explore of Los Angeles; exploreASIAN; Native Education College; Pacific Opera Victoria; the DTES Carnegie Centre; and, many more.
Year round, we also give concerts, taking our music to people where they live. In everything, we try to widen the circumference of opera.
