Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Centre

Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region is a place of unparalleled beauty and abundant biodiversity, rich with cultural heritage and traditional knowledge. This place is a conservation priority on a global scale and encompasses some of the last intact temperate rainforests on earth, vital for climate resiliency and biodiversity. It provides a pristine west coast habitat for hundreds of species, many of which are endangered, vulnerable, or threatened.

We are building a Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Centre to provide a permanent space to educate on the region's importance and grow CBT programs. It will be grounded in Nuu-chah-nulth values and connect to the global significance of the region, making a transformative impact on communities and ecosystems. Aligning with the UNESCO mission of education, science, and culture, the Biosphere Centre will be a gathering space for convening the region to achieve our shared vision: living sustainably in a healthy ecosystem with a diversified economy and strong, vibrant and united cultures.

Centrally located, the Biosphere Centre will be a dynamic place of sharing knowledge, built for community and social equity. It will accelerate opportunities for building regional relationships and support learning and constructive dialogue with residents, First Nations, youth, business, government, visitors, and the not-for-profit and charitable sectors for long-lasting change. By working together to protect diverse and vital ecosystems from development and climate change, we are persevering for healthy and resilient communities and ecosystems. The Biosphere Centre will tell the story of the Biosphere Region's global significance and foster communities unified around reconciliation, youth empowerment, biodiversity conservation, climate action and sustainable development. On a regional level, we will set an example for Biosphere Regions. Thus, our efforts will continue to inspire innovation globally among the UNESCO-designated Biosphere Regions.
