The Clayton McLain Memorial Museum (CMMM) is located in Tomahawk Park in Cut Knife, SK. We showcase local settlement history including the events of the 1885 Northwest Resistance. Twelve historical buildings house the museum’s collections, and outdoor agricultural and transportation displays are located on the grounds. Museum exhibits are also on display in the Cut Knife Library and are switched out regularly.
The Archives is housed in the Museum Administration and Archive Centre (MAAC) in downtown Cut Knife. Archival materials include recorded interviews about the events of 1885, and books and histories from the settler era. Copies of local newspapers from 1914 – to the present are on hand, and the near past is represented with the art, photos and papers of local businesses, schools, and organizations.
The CMMM celebrated its 50th year in 2021. We are powered by volunteers. We wouldn’t be here today without having received the ongoing support of the community for more than 50 years. Support that includes everything from sitting on the Board to mopping floors and watering the flowers, from monetary donations to lemon meringue pies for Hi, It’s Pie Days, and from painting, shingling, and moving houses to cataloguing artifacts. We hire seasonal staff to operate the museum for the summer months, but many of the tasks and chores continue to fall to the community of volunteers who keep us going.
