2021 Earthquake in Haïti
  • A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Haiti on Saturday morning.
  • The US Geological Survey is estimating "high casualties" and widespread disaster.
  • The earthquake was about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and 10 kilometers deep (about 6 miles), according to the USGS
  • According to Le Nouvelliste the earthquake "left many dead and many injured in the department of Grand'Anse. On site, our correspondent reported that the wounded are flocking at a frantic pace to the Saint-Antoine hospital in Jérémie, which was not prepared to manage this emergency situation.
  • The largest hospital center in the department is thus overwhelmed by events. Doctors and other medical personnel are called in to help the injured.
  • As a team from the Ministry of Public Works, with the support of the population, progresses with the clearing of collapsed houses, there are more injured and dead people.Without an official assessment, the table of damage recorded in particular at the level of the historic city center of Jérémie remains a little gloomy.
  • In addition to the roof of the Saint Louis church, which collapsed, the old buildings on rue Stenio Vincent are severely damaged.
