Coastal Sound’s mission is to transform lives and build community through choral music.
Our goals are to inspire each singer to develop to their fullest potential as individuals, musicians and as caring, engaged citizens. We nurture healthy developing voices, musical excellence, artistry and genuine connection.
Singers are grouped by age and experience. All of the 8 choirs at Coastal Sound offer learner-centred instruction by professional choral music educators, vocal coaches and conductors. We aim to meet the musical, intellectual and social needs of singers.
During the organization’s past 3 decades, singers’ lives have been transformed by memorable adventures, travel, cultural exchanges and collaborations that include studio recording sessions for TV soundtracks; singing at esteemed ceremonies like the Olympics and Grey Cup; concerts in historical spaces; entertaining festival crowds; working with esteemed Canadian composers, respected conductors and choirs; performing at national conferences; singing with Michael Bublé, Sarah Brightman, Judith Forst, Donny Osmond…the list of experiences could go on!
Ultimately, sharing and learning about the world through the lens of choral music is very important to these singers, and is a founding principal of Coastal Sound Music Academy. We proudly continue these principals that our founders, under Donna Otto’s leadership, initiated in 1988.
Coastal Sound has a national award-winning Youth Choir, a soulful non-auditioned choir for adults, a crackerjack Children’s choir and song play groups for kids as young as 4 years old. We believe in singing for one’s WHOLE life!
There is even an all boys’ choir at Coastal Sound. This fast-paced and dynamic group nurtures the unique needs of young male singers, so that they can grow to be wonderful, musical men.
Commissioning Canadian composers to write more music for choirs of our kind, has been an ongoing project for the past five years. On March 2, 2019, Coastal Sound formally launched the music commissioning fund.
