about

THE LIBRARY FOUNDATION

The Colchester-East Hants Public Library Foundation is a registered, charitable foundation, which seeks the support of the private sector to maintain and enhance our library system. Public libraries throughout the province are facing severe funding challenges at a time when government support has not kept pace with changing costs and services.

The Foundation was established to ensure that the libraries in our system (5 branches and 1 outreach site) can continue to provide the excellent services which are available for all to enjoy, and can continue to meet the challenges that the library will face in coming years. Grants from the foundation to the library are used for technology acquisitions, improvements, special projects and collections, never for operating costs.

Now, with our new library building being built in Truro, the need is greater than ever. Funds from the town and county are insufficient to cover the essential costs for furniture, fixtures, computers, systems and equipment. The Foundation has been tasked with raising the monies for this final amount and needs your help to achieve it.

Be part of this one-time occasion to help your community.

MY LIBRARY IS …

ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

The library is delighted with the beautiful heritage building, which will be its new home.

The Second Empire style building that will house the new Public Library was designed by Halifax architect, Henry Frederick Busch. Opening as The Normal College in 1878, the facility, and a handful of others like it in other provinces, pioneered teacher education and the concept that one must also know “how” to teach.

A Historical Collections Room in the new library will showcase photos and items from the original interior of the building, as well as, a collection of books highlighting the region’s social, civic, religious, economic, and cultural life, both past and present. The purpose of the Historical Collection is to serve the community through the acquisition and preservation of material contributing to the knowledge of the our region.

A BIRD HABITAT

The new library is and will continue to be home to hundreds of threatened chimney swifts.

The old Normal College chimney, originally earmarked for a steel liner, will be saved and maintained for the exclusive use of chimney swifts. The chimney is the only communal habitat in the county for this threatened species. From May to August, the daily spectacle of hundreds of chimney swifts diving into the chimney at sunset will be preserved and hopefully visible for many years to come.

A COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTOR

The library is proud to contribute in making our community vibrant, economically and culturally.

The Public Library in Truro is proud to be an integral part of our community, offering not just book, eBooks, audio books, magazines, music and video lending services; but also age-appropriate programs from newborns on,wards, such as, Baby & Me time, Robotics classes, a Home Service and Continuing Care Facility Delivery, (see full program schedule here); the free use of public access computers, free Wi-Fi internet access, computer trainingcopier/printeraccess (including a 3D printer), meeting/learning spaces for individuals/groups; and more, in a friendly, all-inclusive environment.

The Public Library and the regional headquarters, which will continue to be housed together in the new library building, employ more than 35 full and part-time workers who live and shop in the area. The Library is in a central location which attracts visitors to businesses in the downtown core of Truro. The Public Library and the regional headquarters make every effort to prioritize purchases of supplies and services from local area businesses.

IN NEED OF MY HELP

The library needs your support to raise the funds needed for essentials.

We hope you will share our excitement about the library’s new home and give us your support. The building is fast taking shape and the library won’t be able to move until funds are raised for all the soft furnishings, computers, AV equipment, security and operational systems. Note the library and the library foundation would not usually be tasked with raising this capital, except our town and county have been abnormally burdened lately with our beautiful new hospital and recreational centre.

A library renovation/relocation had been in the offing for many years, and though the timing is unfortunate, a later move was not an option. The library has outgrown its current location and maintenance issues in both the old and new locations have forced the move.

We are sure you value the library as an educational, cultural and supportive community service, see it on equal footing with other municipal institutions, and will value a beautiful new space as an integral part of a revitalized downtown Truro. The current location has served 47 years and we expect the new, expanded space to serve for the community for many more decades.

Join us in raising the funds for essentials needed for the move to the new library building. Show your support for this one-time need in your community, donate now online.
