To ensure that local youth continue the Gaelic traditions

The Nova Scotia Highland Village Society created the Stòras na h-Òigridh (Treasures of Youth) Fund to ensure that cultural skills based on Gaelic traditions will continue to flourish in Nova Scotia’s youth. The Fund provides financial support to up-and-coming youth between the ages of five and twenty-one who are keen to advance their skills in the Gaelic tradition including: fiddle, pipes, piano, language, storytelling, song and dance. Financial donations can be made to the Fund in general, or directed specifically to the discipline of the donor’s preference. The Treasurers of Youth Fund concept was inspired by the enthusiasm of the late Michael Anthony MacLean from Washabuck, NS. It is with this enthusiasm in mind that disbursements supporting youth to better their fiddling skills will be issued under his name. Michael Anthony was a well-known fiddler who always had a keen interest in assisting youth to further their skills in playing traditional Cape Breton music, especially the fiddle. The Fund was ignited by sales of Michael Anthony MacLean’s “Good Boy M.A.!” CD.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, applicants must be Nova Scotians between the ages of five and twenty-one and keen to advance their skills in one or more of the following Gaelic traditions: fiddle, pipes, piano/guitar accompaniment, language, storytelling, song and dance.

Award Frequency

Typically one scholarship will be awarded annually. However, we reserve the right to award scholarships on a more or less frequent basis as income levels and the Foundation permit.
