Community of Christ Woodfield London Ontario

about

The Woodfield Congregation of Community of Christ has established an International Charity Project to raise funds for a one time assistance to the Tania Reintegration Center in Kieran Kenya to become more self sufficient by the installation of a Solar/Wind electrical generation array.

The Tania Integrated Centre is a Community Based Organization (CBO) which caters to children with physical impairments and other disabilities.

The Center is registered as a charitable children’s institution with the Kenyan Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Development.

The Centre currently services 171 children aged 2 to 17.

The Tania Integrated School teaches children from nursery class up through class 8, including a self-contained special needs class that focuses on life skills. The students follow the Kenyan curriculum, and are also exposed to instrumental music classes, computer classes, and sign language classes.

Many of the children that are staying and being educated at the Tania center are orphaned or have been cast off by their families due to the child’s mental and physical disabilities.

As such the Center must find means to raise funds to cover the cost of the facility operations and the salaries of the special needs and regular classroom teachers.

The centre has instituted actions to be self sufficient by raising food crops and animals for use at the center, students make hand crafts to sell through partners in the United States and operate a small store/hair salon at the entrance to the facility.

Solar/wind generation project:

One critical need of the Center is the supply of electricity to power the lights, facilities and to operate the water bore hole pump that supplies the drinking water and irrigation for the crops.

The cost of purchasing electricity from KenGen Power Company is high and the government corporation has a strict policy that if the monthly bill is not paid within ten days of the end of the month the corporation disconnects the power to the center. This leaves the children without lights and more critically without water.

The Center has had to ask Teachers to forego salaries on numerous months to ensure the payment of the electrical bill.

Woodfield Community of Christ, working with the Canadian Bishop has been able to set up an International Charity recognized by Canada Revenue to raise funds to install a solar/wind generation array at the center.

The total cost for the project is $90,000 Canadian as a one-time charitable project.

The quotation for the installation was received from a UK based company that has offices/facilities in Nairobi and is world renown for solar generation. This company installed the water bore hole several years ago at Tania.

Community of Christ, Woodfield established a volunteer board of directors the end of October to oversee the project.

100% of all donation received by Woodfield Community of Christ for the Tania Project will be used to fund the Solar/Wind generation array at the Center in Kenya.
