We empower communities to steward the land through ecological restoration, research, and education.
Who We Are
Founded in 1993, Project Watershed empowers communities to steward the land through ecological restoration, research, and education. We are based in the Comox Valley, but our work extends across northern Vancouver Island, from Annie Creek near Qualicum Bay up to Cortes Island and out to the west coast.
Our focus is on streams and wetlands, estuaries, and coastal and nearshore areas, and we deliver projects that help to restore and steward these ecosystems. We also carry out research to identify priority sites for habitat conservation and restoration, develop and test restoration methods, and monitor restoration success. Our land-based education programs support children and youth to gain hands-on experience and skills in ecological restoration and research.
Community engagement is integral to our work. Each year, hundreds of volunteers help to plant and maintain our restoration sites, collect samples or record observations for our research projects, and help deliver youth education programs. Through this, our volunteers connect with nature and develop practical skills in land stewardship.
Our Areas of Impact
K’ómoks Estuary Stewardship - restoring aquatic and land-based habitat in and around the K’ómoks Estuary to support salmonids and other coastal species.
Coastal & Nearshore Stewardship - restoring and researching foreshore and nearshore habitats along eastern Vancouver Island to support salmonids and other coastal species.
Stream & Wetland Stewardship - improving salmon habitat by removing invasive plants, planting native plants and restoring stream functionality and spawning grounds.
Land-based Education - supporting children and youth to gain knowledge, hands-on experience and skills in ecological stewardship and research.
