About COMOX VALLEY TRANSITION SOCIETY
Comox Valley Transition Society was founded in 1987 by a group of caring members of our community who were concerned that women in abusive relationships had nowhere to go. From that time until 1992, we operated as a safe home network, where local families voluntarily took women escaping domestic violence and their children into their own homes.
In 1992, we turned vision into reality and purchased and opened Lilli House, a large, comfortable home with 11 beds in 6 bedrooms situated in a quiet residential neighbourhood. That same year we started the 24-hour Crisis Line and received funding to begin our Stopping The Violence and PEACE (formerly the Children Who Witness Abuse) Counselling Programs, which we’ve been offering ever since. In 1999, we began providing Detox services and in 2000, we opened Amethyst House - a 12-bed social detox and supportive recovery home for women overcoming substance use issues, providing yet another level of support for women in our community.
For more than 30 years, our services have continued to fill an important need in the Comox Valley. Today, Lilli House has14 beds in 9 bedrooms and is often full or over capacity. On average, approximately 300 women and children stay in Lilli House each year, and almost 100 women access services at Amethyst House annually. We receive an average of 1500 crisis calls per year, and many more women and children access our counselling services.
CVTS is also a member agency of the Comox Valley Coalition To End Homelessness and is actively providing services in partnership with the Coalition to support individuals who are unsheltered, precariously housed and/or struggling through poverty in the Comox Valley. Since January 2020, we have been operating the Connect Warming Centre and in April 2020, we took over the Shower Program at the Lewis Centre in Courtenay. Our outreach team provides numerous, essential support services to the most vulnerable people in our community, 5-7 days/week.
