Coverdale Centre for Women has provided shelter to homeless women for 14 years in Saint John, NB, and we have seen firsthand the difficulty women face in transitioning into permanent housing. There are many barriers to permanence, including lack of safe and affordable housing stock, lack of independent living skills, unaddressed or inadequately addressed mental health, addiction, financial hardship. Our goal is to provide women with the best opportunities to break through these barriers and successfully transition to independence. This will be facilitated by our new transitional housing building. This 12 unit building will provide supports on an as-needed basis to women who are struggling in any area to move forward. The building will be staffed and we will be collaborating with partner agencies to provide wrap-around services offering women the very best chance at successful independent living. Each unit will be fully furnished with everything a woman needs to start out on her own – furniture, washer and dryer, kitchen appliances, etc. Funds raised through Canada Helps giving will be used to help fund this exciting project to reduce homelessness and help women rise beyond possibility.
