Craque-Bitume is an urban ecology nonprofit based in Québec City, born from grassroots citizen mobilization. Since 2011, we’ve been supporting the community in adopting practical, accessible, and collective eco-friendly habits.
Our work is organized around four key areas:
-
Urban gardening, through collective gardens like Les Ateliers à la Terre, educational gardening activities for all ages, and handcrafted raised garden beds. These projects nourish both the soil and the sense of community, while promoting food autonomy.
-
Community composting, with 36 free composting sites across Québec City. We also provide support for setting up and maintaining composters, as well as a line of artisanal composting bins.
-
Eco-citizen training, offering diverse workshops on plant-based cooking, herbalism, zero waste living, bike maintenance, DIY body care products, and more. These trainings foster autonomy and ecological awareness in everyday life.
-
Community engagement, which strengthens the connection between all programs. This area encourages volunteer involvement, supports our collective decision-making, and ensures alignment with our mission.
Craque-Bitume is guided by values of inclusion, social ecology, horizontal decision-making, transparency, equality, and consensus. We believe that by keeping our activities affordable, inclusive, and easy to understand, everyone can become an active agent of change in their community.
Mission
To promote and support community engagement and sustainable living through hands-on, community-based initiatives. We aim to equip individuals and groups with the tools they need to build more resilient and environmentally responsible urban environments.
Community Roots
Founded in 2011, Craque-Bitume grew out of the experience of a group of residents previously involved in the Eco-Quartier Collective, a longstanding urban ecology initiative. Our approach remains rooted in collaboration, volunteer engagement, and democratic participation.
