Mission Statement: To lend a hand where most needed and to treat with dignity and caring those individuals in our community who are less fortunate.
Over four decades ago, a group of three compassionate women began what would eventually grow into the Creston Valley Gleaners Society. Initially, their mission was to "glean" unused fruit and produce from local orchards, farms, and gardens. They would ask farmers for the surplus produce, pick it themselves, and clean it in one of the women's basements, then distribute it to families in need.
As the demand for their efforts grew, they expanded operations to Gail Simpson's garage. Only a few years later, community members began donating gently used clothing and household items. More volunteers joined, and it became clear that these items could be sold to generate funds for the Food Bank. This marked the beginning of the Gleaners Society as we know it today supporting two storefronts, the local food bank, and the local food recovery.
Thanks to the generosity of our community and the dedication of countless volunteers, the Gleaners Society has grown into a vital resource, supporting local families in need and making a lasting impact on the Creston Valley.
In 2002, Gleaners found they had some extra funds, so the decision was made to offer the first disbursements to support the United Church Wednesday Lunch Program and the Ministerial Association. Since then, the Creston Valley Gleaners Society has offered support to many community programs, some of which are:
United Church Lunch Program, Holy Cross Soup Kitchen, Angel Flight East Kootenay, Beyond Wild, Creston Valley Bird Fest, Boswell Historical Society, Canyon School Health Program, CDSCL Therapeutic Riding Program, Christmas Hamper Fund, Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, Community Housing Society, Cresteramics Society for the Handicapped, Creston Chamber of Commerce, Creston Options for Sexual Health, Creston Refugee Committee, Creston Trails Society, Creston Valley Hospice Society, Creston Valley Hospital, Creston Valley Ministerial Association Programs, Elementary School Breakfast and Lunch Programs, Focus on Youth, Girl Guides, Homelinks, Interior Health, Kootenay Region Association for Community Living (Spectrum Farms), Little Chefs, Pregnancy Outreach, Swan Valley Lodge, Therapeutic Activities Program for Seniors (TAPS), Valley Community Services
