Crib Canada- Working with Efrat to Save Lives

Imagine the excitement and joy most women feel upon discovering that they are pregnant. Now imagine having to choose between having a baby and paying the rent. Or between having a baby and buying food for your family. In Israel today, too many expectant mothers are faced with these types of difficult decisions. Tragically, despite their desire to have their babies, many expectant mothers feel they have no choice but to terminate their pregnancies. They are simply overwhelmed by the costs of providing for a new baby.

Crib Canada, a registered Canadian charity works closely with Efrat, an Israel-based organization to help these women and their families. Efrat has been supporting mothers and saving babies’ lives for over 45 years, and in the past 45 years helped over 82,000 women and saved over 82,000 babies. Crib Canada arranges for an Efrat social worker to assess the family’s financial situation in order to ensure that they are truly in need, and qualify for Crib Canada assistance. Then, depending on the specific circumstance, Crib Canada provides items such as a baby crib, stroller, bathtub, blankets and sheets as well as an annual supply of diapers and formula.

Is that all it takes? Can such relatively small amounts of money really save a baby’s life? To your average middle class Canadian this may seem astounding. But, the answer is a resounding yes. These women want to have their babies but feel that they have no choice. Just knowing that Crib Canada will provide their baby’s needs for its first two years is enough to provide these women with the peace of mind to choose to have their babies.

Donations of all amounts are appreciated. A donation of $1800 is all that is needed to save a Jewish child and these donors will be notified shortly after the baby they helped save is born, receiving a special certificate acknowledging their donation.
