Christie’s summer programs give children and youth from refugee claimant families a safe, active and joyful place to spend the summer while school is out. This year, Christie did not receive the full summer staffing support requested through Canada Summer Jobs, leaving an unexpected $10,000 staffing gap. Without additional support, summer programming will need to be reduced.

For younger children, camp means swimming, field trips, library visits, arts and crafts, outdoor play, games, friendship and routine. It gives children a chance to stay active, cared for and connected during the long summer break.

Christie expects approximately 20 children aged 5-12 in summer camp this year. Some need additional support and attention. An extra camp counsellor will improve the staff-to-child ratio and give staff more capacity to provide one-on-one care for those with special needs, while keeping the full group safe, engaged and included.

For youth, summer programming is equally important. These youth, ages 16-18, are spending their first summer in Canada and are without a parent or guardian for the first time. When school is out, their days can become open, unstructured and isolating. A youth recreational and leisure activities program coordinator would help provide safe, supervised activities, including recreation, outings, community connections and positive engagement.

For children, youth, parents and caregivers, these programs offer reassurance, structure and belonging. A gift to the summer appeal will help Christie provide safer, stronger and more welcoming summer programming for children and youth.
