Dechinta is the only land-based university-accredited program in the world, and the only program mandated to serve Indigenous peoples.
Dechinta is the Wıı̀lıı̀deh word for bush, or being in the bush. We imagine a future of cultural revitalization through a reconnection with the land. We are committed to supporting Indigenous self-determination. Through a community-centered approach, our programs build the educational capacity and employment opportunities of students and youth in the North. All courses are led by Indigenous experts, professors, artists and knowledge keepers, rooted in Indigenous knowledge, practices, philosophies and ethics. Dechinta’s program model combines research-led teaching and community engagement to create a comprehensive Indigenous-led model for learning and innovation in the North.
We believe in supporting self-determining and sustainable Northern communities rooted in Indigenous Knowledge and values. Our education programming offers a variety of post-secondary courses and semester programs, the Dechinta Certificate for Research and Learning, options for degree bridging, and specialized language and culture programs. Our research programs involve research methods trainings, community ethics intensives, research partnerships with academic and community partners, and our own Social Science and Humanities Research Council grants. Our community work involves governance trainings, cultural programming for youth, Elder’s workshops, arts and culture events, and support the creation of community-led programs that reflect the needs of Northern communities.
