History: The Denman Health Centre story is one of community commitment. The Society (DHCS) was incorporated in August 2005. Physician services had up until this time been provided from a private clinic. A building was donated, and community donors and volunteers refurbished it to function as a well-needed medical clinic – providing support for three physicians and helping to attract new physicians to practice on Denman. When the property was sold, the community again rallied: the owner sold the clinic building to the Society for $1.00; a resident gifted a downtown property; countless individuals donated funds and hours of time, expertise, goods and materials to move the building to its new site. At this time, The Society undertook a two-room expansion to accommodate other health-related services.

Today: The mandate of the DHCS is “to facilitate the provision of health care services on Denman Island by providing, maintaining and managing facilities, premises and equipment…”. Since 2010, In its present location, the Health Centre was reroofed, the parking lot redesigned with wheelchair accessibility and an electronic medical record system introduced. In 2018 the society installed new air conditioning, heating and air purification systems to conform with standards for such medical facilities. In 2019, Telehealth capabilities were installed.

The Health Centre is well used by the medical clinic and by numerous other health related societies and practitioners and so the efforts of the Denman Health Centre Society continue. We gratefully welcome donations and bequests to help us maintain this crucial community facility.
