The Diabetes Research & Treatment Centre (DRTC) was established in 1996 in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba during Dr. Aubie Angel’s tenure as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba and Physician-in-Chief at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg. It was established as an interdisciplinary centre in order to promote research, education and treatment of Diabetes in the province of Manitoba. It subsequently evolved as a charitable organization with national scope and engaged in a variety of educational initiatives to draw attention to Diabetes Mellitus as a major public health problem affecting all age groups and ethnic communities.
