After a disaster or conflict, families face many challenges. One of the tools GlobalMedic uses to support families are our Family Emergency Kits (FEK). These kits have been designed with several components to solve pressing needs faced by families in crisis. Your donation of $30 can provide one Family Emergency Kit to a family in need.
What is in a Family Emergency Kit?
Water
One of the biggest risks that vulnerable communities face in the wake of disasters is waterborne illness. This is caused by the disruption of safe drinking water sources, forcing individuals to retrieve their water through untreated and potentially contaminated sources. Waterborne illnesses like cholera and typhoid can be detrimental to a family’s health and are often deadly.
The main item included in an FEK is a water purification solution. This is typically a Rainfresh Household Water Purification Unit. Rainfresh units are lightweight, durable and compact, requiring no electricity or moving parts. The units can purify water from virtually any freshwater source and last up to one year. Rainfresh’s ceramic filtration technology traps pathogenic bacteria and protozoan cysts in addition to reducing sediment and suspended matter down to 0.3 microns.
Hygiene
In order to maximize shipping efficiency, each kit comes with hygiene items to assist families in maintaining a level of adequate sanitation. This includes bars of soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Along with clean drinking water, basic hygiene practices like washing your hands is critical in the wake of a disaster to minimize the chances of contracting an illness and disease.
Solar Light
Light can have a positive impact on safety and comfort during disaster. These lights are lightweight, rechargeable and provide families with extended access to light when energy sources are unreliable, allowing them to regain a sense of normalcy.
