As Atlantic Canada's environmental law watchdog, we encourage the adoption and enforcement of innovative and effective environmental laws.
As Atlantic Canada's environmental law watchdog, ECELAW encourages the adoption and fair enforcement of innovative and effective environmental laws.
ECELAW is an environmental law charity. From our office in Halifax, we work throughout Atlantic Canada seeking a clean, healthy environment through public legal education, community collaboration, and legal action.
What We Do
At ECELAW we make environmental laws and legal options easy to understand for Atlantic Canadians who are fighting for environmental justice.
We collaborate with local, regional, and national groups to strengthen environmental laws and ensure those laws are upheld, and we provide direct support to individuals, organizations, and communities who are seeking to defend our environment through the law and legal action.
How We Do It
ECELAW provides information, education, and research on environmental law issues to Atlantic Canadians by:
- responding to inquiries from the public about environmental law issues;
- developing environmental law summaries and reports and making those materials accessible to the public at no cost;
- maintaining an online Information Library that includes hundreds of environmental law case summaries from throughout Atlantic Canada;
- hosting legal information workshops and community legal clinics;
- taking part in panel presentations on issues related to environmental law and environmental justice;
- facilitating working groups throughout Atlantic Canada that are seeking legal rights to a healthy environment;
- working with law students and helping to train the next generation of keen environmental lawyers; and
- taking legal action in the courts on matters of public interest.
