ENCF and staff of the John Janzen Nature Centre developed a Master Plan in 1996, which would guide the activities of the Nature Centre and describe in detail the types of exhibits and displays to be provided for the enjoyment of visitors. The Master Plan identified potential key projects for consideration in the years to come, as funding becomes available.
The ENCF works closely with its members and with its partner, the City of Edmonton, to achieve these goals, and in 2012 the expansion was completed and the playroom opened to the public. The Green Roof opened in the summer of 2013.
Several new initiatives are planned for the near future:
- Exhibit Room - redevelopment
- Trailhead signage
- Interpretive signage
- Outdoor play space
The ENCF in conjunction with the John Janzen Nature Centre and the City of Edmonton has placed a high priority on the redevelopment of the Centre into a facility that will provide environmental education and recreation for the citizens of Edmonton. The new developments will satisfy an addressed need to provide more exhibits, diversify programming opportunities and improve visitor amenities for customers of the Centre.
