Environmental Leadership Canada

about

ABOUT ELC

Environmental Leadership Canada is a Canadian educational charity (#762079549 RR 0001). We believe that people need to know more about how politics works so they can make politics work for the health of our planet.

Through our programs, we aim to build a new generation of environmental leaders and to boost the capacity of everyday Canadians who care about the environment to engage in our democracy and hold elected officials accountable for their environmental commitments.

We do not lobby or take policy positions. Our approach is cross-partisan because leadership must exist in every political party for lasting environmental change.

OUR INITIATIVES

The Parliamentary Internship for the Environment (PIE)

Each year since 2018, PIE has placed a cohort of young leaders (aged 18-30) with MPs across parties and invested in their professional development, environmental education and leadership skills.  Interns gain critical know-how that accelerates their ability to drive environmental change throughout their careers across sectors and boosts the capacity of elected officials to make environmental progress.

100 Debates on the Environment

100 Debates works with community groups across Canada to organize all-candidate debates on the environment during key elections, with the aim of making sure the environment is an issue no party nor candidate ignores. Since 2019, we’ve coordinated over 180 debates across two federal and one provincial election.

Every Day Advocates and FLIP

We offer workshops, training, and a library of resources to make it easier for everyday folks to understand political barriers and opportunities for environmental change, to engage civically, and advocate for their community’s environmental concerns.

Our FLIP events (Future Leaders in Politics) are focused on making politics more accessible for young environmental leaders through educational events, participatory learning, and dialogue with elected leaders at all levels.

OUR HISTORY & APPROACH

ELC delivers these programs and initiatives with the support of GreenPAC, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that shares ELC’s aim to see greater environmental leadership in politics (and also does not take policy positions). GreenPAC transferred responsibility for the management and delivery of these programs to ELC in 2023 to enable their growth as charitable initiatives. ELC is benefitting from the solid foundation on which GreenPAC established these programs over the past five years as it takes on their ongoing stewardship.
