Being in hospital can be frightening, and emotionally and physically exhausting. When an individual lives with epilepsy, extended hospital stays in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit or Intensive Care Unit for post-operative brain surgery are daunting experiences for families. With the gift of a Because We Care package, you will provide a family with essential items (and a couple of items just for fun) to make a hospital stay more manageable for both a child undergoing treatment and their families, ensuring they can focus on what is most important – their medical care.

Each package is tailored to individual family needs, likes and interests and is hand delivered to the hospital by an Epilepsy Durham Region staff member or volunteer. While the items in the package are so thoughtfully embraced, it is what the Because We Care package represents that is the true gift – a visit from someone who understands and cares, letting a family know that they are not alone in their journey.

Items include:

• items to stay comfortable and cozy
• gas cards to assist with transportation costs
• child’s toy, reading material and/or activity
• everyday essential items to make hospital life more manageable
• gift cards to restaurants and shops that are accessible from the hospital
