EPL: Make it Possible!

The Edmonton Public Library has grown from a place for books to a place for people. EPL welcomes everyone, and we share every day. EPL makes it possible for Edmontonians to connect, to learn and to belong. At EPL, Edmontonians have access to an outstanding public library system that was named 2014 Library of the Year, and continues to be a model for libraries around the world.

While we proudly offer traditional library services, we find innovative, creative and cutting-edge ways to provide relevant resources, the latest technology and a diverse offering of programs for all ages. Services are available at our 22 branches, online and well beyond library walls. Working with hundreds of partner organizations in our communities, we bring services to customers when and where they need them – in hospitals, schools, community centres and even the correctional system.

In 2018, we welcomed more than 15.4 million virtual and in-person visits, hosted 22,031 free programs and loaned out 11.3 million items. Our previous fundraising activities also continue to have a strong impact on Edmontonians. Last year we distributed 8,440 Welcome Baby early literacy kits and our four epl2go literacy vans delivered 1,149 classes and workshops to 27,123 attendees.

Great libraries shape great cities, and they are vital to the economic, social and cultural foundation of any vibrant, rich and thriving society. With a legacy of innovation and a trademark of excellence, EPL is inspired every day to further propel our city’s public library system forward and continue to provide the absolute best for all of our customers.

What can you make possible?

We are currently raising funds for the revitalization of the Stanley A. Milner Library. The largest of our 22 locations, our downtown branch receives over 1.2 million visits each year. With your support we will be able to transform the Milner Library into a space that better meets the growing and changing needs of Edmontonians by adding an abundance of natural light, more quiet study and reading spaces, improvements to energy efficiency, increased access to the building and more!

What People Are Saying

"In 2016, when I got bored at work, I would come by to explore and enchant myself. So many events, so many people – a hub for downtown that didn’t discriminate based on who you were. Truly the last bastion of common community space accessible to all...let the heart of it remain golden."

"We have taken every early literacy program EPL offers, and every week we visit our local branch to pick out books and movies. Today, my eldest son Dexter is among the top in his class for reading and my younger son loves reading every night."

— Crystal Driedger - Early Literacy Services Customer

"Dear Shelley Milner Library, we spent many happy Saturday mornings here on our way to the market. We will miss you and we will be back when you open! "

"Basically my whole life I have been a non-member of society. This outreach program is part of my sobriety right now. For the first time I have ID, I have a family doctor. I love this building. Without this building I don’t think I’d be halfway to where I am right now."

— Douglas Myers - Outreach Services Customer

"I am a new Canadian. It was taking me a lot of time to find a suitable program to study in order to be qualified for jobs I was applying. Online accredited courses accessible through EPL helped me a lot and was one of the reasons of my employment."

— Nozima Nurmukhamedova - EPL Customer

"When I was a street kid, this place [the Milner Library] kept me alive...This place was home. I will never forget this place, or the days I spent staying warm here."
