About our Church
Falkland BC is a small rural community between Kamloops and Vernon straddling Highway 97. Falkland is famous for its Annual Stampede which is more than 100 years old, and also for what is reputedly the largest of all Canadian flags, which is posted on the mountain overlooking the town. However, there is another unique feature to which Falkland can lay claim.
Several members of five small congregations in Falkland & District realized there was a need for a larger church building which could be rented out to congregations for their worship services, plus to groups and individuals for various events. People of those five denominations (Alliance, Catholic, Anglican, United, and Seventh Day Adventist) plus many other community-minded citizens, raised money and worked together, with the help of a provincial grant, to build a non-denominational community church and fellowship centre which was opened in 1987.
This community facility is managed by a volunteer group, the Falkland & District Community Church & Fellowship Society (FDCCFS).
The Falkland Community Church building has been the site of, not only worship services and prayer meetings, but also Kid's Club, Junior Youth, and Senior Youth Clubs, Tae Qwan Do, exercise classes, AAA, etc. A nurse hosts mother-and-baby health sessions once a month. The building is also rented out for funerals, weddings, banquets, etc. One summer, during forest fires, the downstairs even housed dogs and cats for their evacuated owners. We put on a community turkey supper each November.
Heart-felt thanks to all the kind, generous donors, granting agencies, and workers who helped build this wonderful facility and who, over the years have made it possible to pay for utilities, insurance, maintenance, plus 2 new high-efficiency furnaces, refinishing and painting of the exterior stucco, LED lights upstairs and downstairs, and a security gate for a basement entryway.
Several exciting project have been completed in the past few years. Our 36-year-old worn, stained downstairs carpeting was replaced with beautiful new vinyl planking, so much more suitable for food-serving, and for baby and youth events. We've also had the downstairs completely repainted. With volunteer labour, we have sound-proofed the main downstairs area, and replaced our old badly-deteriorated handicap ramp. Our crumbling outside concrete front stairs have been beautifully resurfaced, and our new handicap ramp has been coated with the same polymer material.
Our latest projects have included a beautiful new sidewalk, much safer than the uneven old concrete blocks that tripped people and were very difficult for snow shovelling.
Our major project, dreamed of for years, has finally been realized; a beautiful new metal roof, paid for with kind community grants from Shuswap Foundation and CSRD, PLUS term deposits from many years of kind donations given by individuals in the community and all over Canada. We are deeply grateful.
Thank you very much for your faithful support. It is deeply appreciated, and benefits the whole community.
