Help end child poverty in Canada during the next Federal election.
Over 1.4 million children and families continue to live in poverty in Canada. Shamefully, 38% of First Nations children live in poverty.
In Canada, in 1989, Federal parliamentarians unanimously passed a motion to “seek to achieve the goal of eliminating poverty among Canadian Children by the year 2000.” In response, Campaign 2000 is consistently stating that child poverty is not inevitable, but that it is a result of policy choices.
You can support our efforts to end child poverty in Canada by donating to our 30 (more) Years!? campaign.
Our campaign will produce joint statements and resources for the 2019 federal election during our three-day national event in Toronto, ON. Our intermediate goal will be to re-purpose these materials for our national Annual Report Card, the perennial resource quoted widely and frequently by media and policy makers alike. Finally, our long term commitment is to invigorate our partnership for as long as the 1989 promise remains but a dream, not a reality.
The Beneficiaries: Canadian families and children living in poverty
Much has been accomplished since 1989. After years of lobbying by Campaign 2000 and others, major gains have been made in the last few years. The Campaign 2000 partnership pushed hard for the introduction of the Canada Child Benefit and, later, its indexation for inflation. We are deeply involved in working with policy makers to develop and implement a national poverty strategy. At the provincial level, we equally push for comprehensive and coordinated efforts to end family and child poverty.
But, regardless of positive changes achieved, over 1.4 million children and families continue to live in poverty in Canada. Shamefully, 38% of First Nations children live in poverty. Our Annual Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Canada, and its provincial adaptations from British Columbia to Nova Scotia, continue to provide comprehensive solutions and recommendations to governments.
Donor recognition opportunities are available and can be aligned with the funder’s priorities.
