The Foothills Land Trust (FLT) is an entirely volunteer run, community-based land trust.  It operates solely within the boundaries of Foothills County (FC) immediately adjacent to southwest border of the City of Calgary in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies.  FLT was established in response to a growing interest in land conservation within FC and recognition by local residents of the need to form a conservation land trust dedicated to the foothills region. FC is under intense developmental pressure and is vulnerable to considerable landscape fragmentation.

Our mission is to protect the natural and working landscapes that define Foothills County forever, by enhancing and conserving the biodiversity, wildlife habitat, riparian areas and watersheds of the region.

A land trust is a non-profit, independent, non-government organization committed to the permanent protection of our natural heritage by actively working to conserve land through the use of Conservation Easements* (CE’s) and by direct land ownership.  Land trusts work cooperatively with private landowners to enable them to leave a legacy.

 FLT is not in a position to contribute to the purchase of CE’s or land itself.  Instead, we rely on the incredible generosity of farsighted private landowners in our area to place CE’s on their property or to make outright donations of land.  We have a small group of dedicated volunteers who give generously of their time to provide most of the resources we require.  Even with such a low cost operation, we do require financial resources to pay necessary bills.  Donations of any size are welcome and make a powerful difference to our operation.

* A CE is a legal restriction registered on the property title setting out the permitted uses of the property.  It survives the sale of a property and thus provides protection forever.
