About FREEWILL SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
The iconic Freewill Shakespeare Festival is produced every summer by Free Will Players in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The plays are performed at Hawrelak Park, in the 1100 seat, canopy covered, Heritage Amphitheatre. The company has attracted over 280,000 people to 43 main-stage productions.
These large numbers are a reflection of the high quality of production and the very affordable ticket prices, that range from the 9 pay-what-you-will performances, to free for children ten and under, to, discounts for seniors and students, to the economical season pass. The Free Will Players are committed to bringing professional theatre to all in the community.
The Festival employs 50 people at the height of summer. This includes actors, designers, stage managers, production managers, administrative assistants, publicist, technical director, site/volunteer coordinators, and a variety of other positions. 40% of the Players’ yearly budget goes to artists’ fees.
The Festival has wonderful group of over 180 Volunteers who put in over 2000 hours each summer.

Free Will Players are a not-for-profit theatre company formed in 1989. As operators of the Freewill Shakespeare Festival, the Players endeavor to create professional, contemporary, innovative productions of the works of William Shakespeare that are accessible to all audiences, regardless of age, ability, education, or income levels, while also developing new audiences and mentoring theatre professionals of the future.
