FOG's purposes, as stated in its Articles of Incorporation, are:
- To actively and tangibly support the mission, goals and objectives of Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden (The Garden)
- To provide a mechanism for continuous, experienced based learning for individuals from all walks of life with an interest in the botanical, horticultural and eco-system aspects of their natural environment.
- To help preserve, interpret and manage the natural reserve areas of The Garden.
- To further community awareness of, involvement in, and respect for, the natural environment as represented by The Garden.
In support of its goals, in 2013 FOG set raising funds to restore the Squires Carriage House as its priority capital project. Additional information about this registered heritage farm building can be found under Funds tab above.
About Our Charity
Members of the Friends of the Garden (FOG) are individuals and families who support the botanical, horticultural and environmental objectives of Memorial University Botanical Garden, a division of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
With a membership approaching 600, some Friends volunteer their time and expertise through such activities as trail patrol, growing plants for the popular plant sale fundraisers, and helping out at special events organized by FOG or The Garden. In addition to meetings of its volunteer Board of Directors, Friends actively participate in crafting, carpentry and horticultural groups which meet regularly at The Garden. Friends also volunteer with representatives from other like-minded groups as members of Working Groups such as the annual Mystery Garden Tour Working Group and the emerging NL Chapter of Master Gardeners.
Volunteers have assisted the Botanical Garden since its inception in 1971. The Friends offically formed in 1976 and in 1985 incorporated and registered as a charity.
