Since our inception in October 2000 as the Friends of the British Columbia Archives, our organization has been supporting both the provincial archives of British Columbia and regional archives and research communities across BC. In 2025, we changed our name to the Friends of British Columbia’s Archives and expanded our mandate. Our goal now is to raise awareness of archival institutions and collections across the province and highlight the importance of archives for all types of research, from legal to historical to genealogical.

• FBCA raises awareness of the hundreds of archival institutions, operations, and collections -- including local government, community, Indigenous, university and college, and others, across British Columbia.
• FBCA works actively to support the records and archives needs of Indigenous communities in BC, in keeping with the 94 Calls to Action in Canada’s 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report.
• FBCA strives to expand support for the archival and research needs of the growing percentage of British Columbians who live outside of the Greater Victoria or Lower Mainland areas, including people from all cultures and communities in Canada's most ethnically diverse province.
• FBCA advocates for the protection of both physical archives and digital archives, which are at such an extreme risk of loss.

FBCA continues to offer our exciting speakers and events series. We also provide grants to community archives through our Reksten Community Archives Grant and facilitate access to archival documents at the BC Archives and Royal BC Museum through our Indigenous Research Grant.

Looking ahead, we hope to provide more member and public events, both virtually via online technologies or in person in different locations around BC. We also hope to share news stories about archives and research across BC; promote archival activities; and collaborate with communities and groups across the province.
