The aims of Gabriola Land and Trails Trust are to secure, develop, and sustain a network of parkland and trails on Gabriola Island for the benefit of the public, and to preserve sites of environmental, historical, and social importance.
Our primary expenditures are for; environmental assessments, legal costs, land surveys, insurance, materials for trail construction, and administrative costs.
GaLTT is a strong organization based on volunteerism. GaLTT operates according to the high standards specified by the BC Land Trust Alliance, The Canadian Land Trust Alliance and The American Friends of Canadian Land Trusts.
We endeavor to work in cooperation with all levels of government for the betterment of our community.
About Our Charity
GaLTT has a multi-year plan to establish a continuous system of public trails from one end of the island to the other between Descanso Bay and Drumbeg Provincial Park. We're very close to our goal now but negotiations with private landowners and government bodies are in progress, and we hope to achieve our goal SOON.
Gabriola Land & Trails Trust (GaLTT) is successfully achieving objectives as shown by the strategic plan on our website.
This past years have been very productive. We have implemented numerous trail licences to provide public access across private lands. Licensed trails are one of the ways used to provide trail linkages in our community. Many trails and shore accesses are provided on undeveloped road allowances.
Protection of island ecosystems is enhanced through securing conservation covenants (easements), and through advocacy in favour of parks and conservation. We have established land acquisition fund for the future purchase of lands.
