About GABRIOLA LAND & TRAILS TRUST
GaLTT is a nonprofit charitable organization active on Gabriola Island and surrounding islands, the traditional unceded territories of the Snuneymuxw and other First Nations. Our “conserve + connect” tagline expresses our mandate concisely—we aim to conserve areas of environmental and social importance, and to develop a network of sustainable parklands and trails.
CONSERVATION
Conservation is critical to the health of our island and our island community, and is at the heart of what GaLTT does. GaLTT identifies priority ecosystems for protection, raises funds for land acquisition, establishes and maintains conservation covenants with private landholders, and supports people who are trying to protect natural habitats on their own lands. We also work to manage invasive plants, educate Gabriolans about the island’s special environments, and advocate for land conservation. Partnering with various government and community organizations makes our work more effective.
TRAILS
We are well known for our work developing and maintaining the most visible connections on Gabriola—trails.
On public land such as parks and nature reserves, we work by agreement with partner agencies such as the Regional District of Nanaimo Parks Department and Islands Trust. We also maintain important connections between neighbourhoods by partnering with private landowners through the use of trail licences. Our Accessibility Committee takes on improving access to our natural spaces, especially at beaches.
OUTREACH AND EDUCATION
Our outreach programs seek to educate and involve our community in protecting natural areas and native species and in sharing our trails respectfully with all user groups. Our very successful Nature Stewards program focuses specifically on the things individuals can do on their own lands.
Your memberships and donations make all we do possible.
Our work is mostly volunteer-driven, though we pay for support when the work goes beyond our volunteer capabilities.
Membership and donations are fully tax deductible. Membership options include annual or 5-year term fees (set amounts) or monthly donations (variable). If you have the ability to donate on a monthly basis ($5 minimum) please consider doing so—it provides stable income to fund our work.
You can allocate both one-time and recurring monthly donations, including memberships, to any of our dedicated funds: General Use, Land Acquisition, Accessibility, and Nature Stewards.
• GENERAL USE FUND: used by GaLTT where needed, e.g. trail improvements, invasive species management, operations
• LAND ACQUISITION FUND: costs related to acquisition and management of land officially designated for conservation purposes, whether through outright purchase or conservation covenants
• ACCESSIBILITY FUND: costs related to initiatives and improvements for people with mobility issues
• NATURE STEWARDS FUND: costs related to conservation education and conservation projects such as our Nature Stewards program
