To preserve, protect, and enhance the quality of the human and natural environment of Galiano Island.
About Our Charity
The Galiano Conservancy Association is a community-based non-profit society and registered charity founded in 1989 and dedicated to protecting the natural and human environment of Galiano Island, British Columbia. The Conservancy is one of BC's first land trusts, and owns and protects several environmentally sensitive properties on Galiano. We also provide a variety of environmental education programs, and have active projects in the areas of conservation mapping and ecological restoration. In addition we maintain an extensive library and resource collection to which the public has access.
Our most ambitious project to date has been the purchase of a 188-acre property with 2 km of oceanfront on Galiano Island, for our Learning Center. We've seen that urban children and youth coming for our Nature Education programs can have much deeper experiences if they stay for multiple days out of the city - so we purchased a property perfect for running these programs amidst world class ecological restoration projects, small scale community agricultural work, and renewable energy generation. All of these other activities are being developed over time (several have already begun) and will add to an incredibly unique and meaningful experience for participants, both emotionally and intellectually. Our long-term goal is to extend our efforts into a self sustaining social enterprise which contributes both to the local Galiano Community and larger region.
