Goldstream Hatchery is a volunteer organization involved in salmon enhancement and education.
Goldstream Hatchery is a volunteer organization involved in salmon enhancement and education. Our work helps to maintain the number of Coho and Chum salmon available in the waters off the south easterly tip of Vancouver Island for the sports fishery, native food fishery, local commercial and charter operations.
Since the mid-1990’s, the hatchery has been a valuable resource in educating school children about the importance of maintaining salmon populations and about the life cycle of salmon. Hatchery tours, guided by our volunteers, have given local children a lifelong appreciation for salmon, and the classroom incubation program has provided hands-on experience in raising salmon.
The hatchery also provides facilities for research projects undertaken by post graduate students that may not have been possible otherwise. Besides helping these students further their education, these projects contribute to our knowledge and conservation efforts. Other conservation groups also collaborate with the Goldstream Hatchery on various projects around the region.
