Hunger exists 365 days of the year, and the need for a consistent supply of healthy food is highest in the summer for families who are food insecure - those who can't afford to put healthy food on the table all the time. Children are home from school, and all of the supportive meal and snack programs that schools provide are paused for the summer.
At the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, we have seen a 25% increase in demand year over year, 35% of those who need our support are children, and 25% are seniors. We are proud to offer our clients a selection of 9 - 12 items each week, many of which are fresh produce. We also offer a selection of protein, including milk and eggs. 55% of the food we purchase is fresh, and we offer respectful, dignified places to access food on a weekly basis across Vancouver, the North Shore, New Westminster and Burnaby.
Summer is traditionally the slowest time for donations, so please know that any donation you feel you can make is greatly appreciated!
