GUATEMALA STOVE PROJECT

about

Our Mission

To assist in the relief of poverty and improve the health and well being of the indigenous and other disadvantaged peoples of Guatemala, and of similar peoples in other areas.

About GUATEMALA STOVE PROJECT

The Guatemala Stove Project (GSP) is a group of Canadian volunteers mainly from Ontario who began working in response to a request for help from CEDEC, an indigenous non-profit group working in Guatemala's Altiplano (Western Highlands). CEDEC had identified the need for masonry cookstoves in the communities they serve, but residents lacked the material resources to build stoves for themselves. The Guatemala Stove Project was born out of this need.

Currently the GSP works with 3 Guatemalan partners (CEDEC, AMI and AMMID) to build masonry cookstoves. Other activities include: educational bursaries for girls to attend high school, microloans for small entrepreneurial endeavours and emergency relief funds as needed.

Cooking over an open fire causes a wide range of chronic illnesses and health impacts as well as deforestation and soil erosion. These improved GSP cookstoves which burn fuels more efficiently using half the amount of fuel help reduce toxic pollutants. The reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is significant with an average reduction of two to three tons of CO2 per year or 20 to 30 tons of CO2 over the ten year lifespan of the average family cookstove, a bit more than the average Canadian creates in a year (19 tons).

The Guatemala Stove Project documents its work extensively, photographing each stove and collecting data on the families and schools. Reports on the status of the bursary students and microloan recipients are regularly sent to GSP and volunteer visits are made when feasible.

It costs CAD $350.00 to provide a cookstove for a Maya family, or $600.00 for a school cookstove. An educational bursary for a girl to attend one year of middle school is CAD $650 and $750 for high school. A beginning microloan is CAD $150

We are able to provide these programs to the communities of the Western Highlands of Guatemala due to the generosity of our donors and we thank you for your support.
